SYREN was formed by Kate Mehan and Lynn Peterson in 2003 and has since produced six New York Seasons. The company has also been presented at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Symphony Space, Dance Theater Workshop, 92nd Street Y, DUMBO Arts Festival, Queens Theatre in the Park, White Plains Performing Arts Center, and numerous schools and performing centers around the region. In 2004, ‘06 and ’07 it received Harkness Space Grants from the 92nd Street Y; the past two years the company has been in residence at DanceNOW/NYC’s Silo, in 2008 Dance Theater Workshop awarded SYREN a competitive Outer/Space Creative Residency; and this March WNYC, New York Public Radio awarded the company participation in its *STAR* Initiative. SYREN is a member of Pentacle and Dance Theater Workshop.
Outreach and education are central to SYREN’s mission, and the company has led workshops or set pieces on students at Purchase College, Yale University, Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts and many other high schools and colleges around the Northeast and Midwest. It has a longstanding relationship with the Drama Desk nominated theater company, Waterwell, and has collaborated on their last four productions including The Persians... (IT Award nomination, Outstanding Choreography).
SYREN was proud to launch its second year of "Dance on Canvas" in January ‘09. This Partnership withThe Art Students League of New York is a series of gallery-based rehearsals where visual artists portray the company’s dynamic motion on canvas. SYREN invites the students into rehearsals held in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery at The Art Students League to observe the dancers in motion and convey that inspiration in their own mediums.
