Dance on Canvas Rehearsals

Program On-Going Since 2008

SYREN has worked in partnership with the Art Students League of New York and independently to create space for an exchange between visual artists and dancers.

Dance on Canvas turns SYREN rehearsals into sessions for visual artists to draw or photograph in response to observing the company rehearsing either in a dance studio, in a church sanctuary, or in an art gallery.  Visual artists are then invited to exhibit art work from the sessions at SYREN performances.  Dance on Canvas work has been exhibited at Ailey Citigroup Theater, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Chelsea Art Museum, and the Office of the Manhattan borough President.

In 2009, this program led to visual artist Xéna Lee creating a back drop for SYREN’s premiere of “the last of the leaves” at The Ailey Citigroup Theater.

This program has been supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
